Eco-Rep Club 環(huán)保大家一起來!Eco Rep Club This club was started by students (namely Felicia!), during the Spring semester of 2017. The club has the aims of increasing environmental awareness, reducing waste in the school and creating an organic vegetable garden. Club members have set up a weekly rota to collect materials and regularly meet during lunch times and after school to participate in ongoing projects. The club has garnered a lot of support from new members in the Autumn term and as the project has progressed, many non-club members and faculty have shown their enthusiasm for the project. So far this year we have: Upcycled an old boat into a raised vegetable bed. The boat has been reclaimed from the local fishery, sanded down, painted and filled with top-soil. We aim to enrich the soil by adding processed organic waste from the school grounds and facilities. We also have recently completed a traditional vegetable plot. The club aims to develop the soil throughout the winter and when spring arrives, we will plant the raised bed and garden with a selection of organic fruits and vegetables to be enjoyed on campus. In order to enrich our soil, we have constructed a compost pile for any garden cuttings and raw food waste from the school's canteen. We aim to produce compost to supplement our organic garden and provide a rich fertilizer to germinate seeds in the Spring time. Eco-Rep has also developed the Bukashi method for fermenting any left over food from breakfast, lunch or dinner. Current output is still in the beginning stages but the club aims to perfect the method and scale-up, hoping to process 100% of waste coming out of the canteen. The Bukashi process employs anerobic bacteria that will decompose food waste not usually suitable for standard composting - food items such as meat, dairy and slightly oily material can be converted into rich fertiliser for our garden this way. If you would like to get involved with our project, please collect your raw food waste at home and send it in to school with your children each Monday and you can contribute to our composting effort. Any and all participation would be greatly recieved! That's all for now, we hope you enjoy following our progress throughout the rest of the year, Eco-Rep team. |
