It is said that the most meaningful day of IVY at the end of 2018 is the campus open day with the theme of “guarding the sea blue and protecting the finless porpoise”. There are Weihai Experimental Middle School, Weihai Huancui International Middle School, Weihai Guzhai Middle School, and Tashan Middle School. More than 500 students and parents from Weihai Bazhong and Sunjiayu Primary Schools came to our school to participate in the event, and watched the porpoise anatomy class conducted by our school's academic principal/biologist teacher John to learn about marine life protection. Great sense and experience the authentic British international class.

The finless porpoise is a national secondary aquatic protected animal. In recent years, due to marine pollution and accidental catching, the living environment of finless porpoise has deteriorated, and the marine finless porpoise has disappeared. The Yangtze finless porpoise is on the verge of extinction. In the familiar Weihai offshore area, marine species are decreasing due to the deterioration of marine ecology. Our school has long been engaged in the topic of “marine biological protection”. In 2017, the academic president, John, led the establishment of the environmental protection community Eco-Rep Club. It has long been specializing in marine protection research and practice, and called on everyone to protect the finless porpoise and the marine environment. Extend the basic knowledge of marine protection and conduct research on marine biological protection in cooperation with local governments, which will cause widespread concern for marine ecology and marine biological protection, and ultimately achieve the restoration of marine species.

The "Guardian Sea Blue, Protecting the Finless Porpoise" project cooperated with the College of Oceanography of Shandong University. The anatomy of the finless porpoise was completed by our teachers and students. In order to successfully complete the anatomical operation of the finless porpoise, the teachers and students of our school made a lot of preparatory work in the early stage, inspected the offshore environment of Weihai and recorded it, and deeply understood the current data on the death of the finless porpoise, and produced promotional materials such as PPT and posters. The finless porpoise stranded on the coast. Through these tasks, students have learned more about the urgency of marine life protection, and also exercised their hands-on ability.

Students who participated in the porpoise anatomy class were Linda, Lucy, Sunny, John Choi, Jini, Kimo, Louis, Amy. In the anatomical class, they all turned into "teachers" one by one, and through their own PPT, they explained the knowledge of finless porpoise and marine protection to the audience on the spot. They first explained it in fluent English and then translated it in Chinese. . The students at the scene listened very seriously. While introducing the knowledge of marine protection, the “teachers” also need to take the “student” knowledge about the ocean under the examination table. “List out the three threats of the marine ecosystem?” “Why should we care about the finless porpoise and its ecological environment? "The students at the stage gave a speech and the atmosphere was lively.

After introducing the knowledge of finless porpoise protection, the porpoise anatomy officially started! Academic principal John led the anatomy of the finless porpoise. In the anatomy, President John introduced the organ structure of the finless porpoise, and demonstrated operational specifications such as anatomical equipment preparation, sterilization and disinfection requirements, protective measures, and on-site segmentation and stripping, removal of provocation, and organ classification. Wait. In the process of anatomy, a sad scene appeared. In the uterus of the dead finless porpoise, an already formed small finless porpoise was discovered. This unfortunate finless porpoise turned out to be a maternity porpoise mother, which made the audience present. . Students also saw some debris in the organ of the finless porpoise and black blood stains, and profoundly understand the serious harm to the marine life caused by marine environmental pollution.

The anatomical activity is over, but the follow-up work on the finless porpoise protection is far from over. In the following time, our school will select dozens of high school students from Weihai Duo Middle School to participate in the follow-up work of the “Guarding the Blue Sea and Protect the Finless Porpoise” project, and provide students with marine biological knowledge training to lead students to the dock and sea staff. Field surveys of the current state of the marine environment and marine life allow students to form marine biological data reports in practice. Students can exercise their hands-on, analytical and research skills in this practice to grow marine ecology and marine biology expertise.

Protecting the finless porpoise and guarding the ocean has a long way to go. IVY will make the Yangtze River Dolphin Conservation Project a long-term project, and spare no effort to play its role in the restoration of marine ecology and the protection of marine species.
