IVY Students Making Success at the Second Weihai English Debate Competition

This autumn in 2017, Beijing Jiaotong University, Weihai, became another host schoolof the BP English Debate Competition after Harbin Institute of Technology, Weihai. This is also the second BP English Debate Competition in eastern Shandong province. Many universities in the Weihai region including Shandong University, Weihai, participated in this competition. Weihai IVY International School, as the only high school team, also participated in the debate.

After several rounds of fierce competition, IVY students Dongjoon Baik and Godwin Liu distinguished themselves and won third place, other contestants also won outstanding participation awards.

Q:What is the BP English Debate Competition?

A:The competition uses the British parliamentary debate format (also known as the world university debate system). This unique format follows the mode of discussing public policy in parliamentary countries to explore a motion in a gentleman’s way. There are two proposition teams and two opposition teams with two people in each team. Team members are randomly assigned to debate.

There are many special rules in the English debate competition. Debating in anon-native language environment challenges not only the English speaking and listening level, but also the ability of language expression and response underpressure.
